RSO – Colorectal Surgery, St Mark’s Hospital
Fixed-term post with London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust, based at St Mark’s Hospital, Harrow, London.
RSO jobs at St Mark’s Hospital don’t come up often, and this one’s a real stepping stone toward consultant-level colorectal surgery. You’ll train inside the world’s only hospital built entirely around bowel disease, on a Band 1A NHS contract with visa sponsorship included.
About the Role
London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust is hiring a Resident Surgical Officer for the colorectal team at St Mark’s Hospital, starting October 2026 or April 2027. The role sits at Specialty Registrar Level 8 or post-CCT Fellow level, so you’ll need an FRCS or equivalent overseas qualification.
St Mark’s isn’t just another surgical unit — it’s the only hospital in the world built entirely around intestinal and colorectal medicine, and one of just 14 centres worldwide recognised by the World Organisation of Digestive Endoscopy. Rare, complex colorectal conditions cross your desk here on a regular basis.
You’ll rotate through specialist firms like robotic cancer surgery, complex cancer, intestinal failure and abdominal wall repair, IBD, or pelvic floor work — covering up to two tracks per six-month post. Nine RSO and Fellow posts run at any one time, each extendable from six months to a full year.
On-call runs on a 1 in 8 rota at St Mark’s, with only an occasional add-on to the Northwick Park EGS rota, roughly 1 in 48. Day to day you’re doing ward rounds, running clinics, sitting in on MDTs, and getting real hands-on time in theatre.
The trust covers Brent, Ealing, Harrow and beyond, with over 8,200 clinical and support staff looking after close to a million people across four major sites. It also holds full university teaching status, so training and research are built into daily practice.
