Ten Scholarships and Internships Abroad With October 2026 Deadlines

Opportunities open to people from every continent do not stay open for long, and October 2026 is packed. Ten of them close within the next 24 days, spread across the United States, Australia, Japan, Thailand, Switzerland, Mexico, Denmark, and the United Kingdom. Some pay well. Others cost you money. A few are not open to everyone, and you will see exactly which ones.

I will tell you who can apply, what you will get, and where to apply. I will also flag the catches, because a missed eligibility rule wastes weeks of effort. Official pages sit behind every link below. I cross-checked the NVIDIA details against current sources while writing this guide. Confirm every other deadline on the official page before you submit.

The Quick Snapshot Table

This table shows how much time you have left today, October 6, 2026, and whether the opportunity puts money in your pocket.

Opportunity Country Level Days left Does it pay you?
Danish Refugee Council internship Denmark University students 5 No, unpaid
OHCHR media internship Switzerland Final-year bachelor’s, master’s, graduates 7 No, unpaid
Alan Turing Institute internship UK / Ireland PhD 7 Depends on the role
UN-Habitat internship Mexico Final-year bachelor’s, graduates 8 No, unpaid
OIST research internship Japan Bachelor’s, master’s 9 Varies, and a JPY 5,000 fee applies

NVIDIA Graduate Fellowship United States PhD 24 Yes, up to USD 60,000
UN ESCAP Energy internship Thailand Bachelor’s to PhD 24 No, unpaid
UN ESCAP Communications internship Thailand Bachelor’s to PhD 24 No, unpaid

Only two of these ten come with real funding. Plan your budget around that fact.

Who Can Actually Apply

Most of these programs welcome applicants from any country. That is the good news. Still, four rules trip people up again and again:

  • Geography matters for the Alan Turing Institute, which only accepts PhD students based in the UK or Republic of Ireland.
  • Degree level matters, because OIST turns away current PhD students while NVIDIA only wants them.
  • Language matters for UN-Habitat, which requires Spanish fluency.
  • Work authorization matters for Denmark and Switzerland, where your visa status can decide the outcome. If the difference between a sponsored role and a standard work visa isn’t clear, this explainer on visa sponsorship vs. work visa is worth a quick read before you apply.

Read the eligibility box on each official page before you write a single word of your application. A strong profile cannot rescue an ineligible one.

Funded Research Routes for PhD Seekers

Casting a wider net for PhD funding? You may also want to check the Monash University PhD Scholarship, a fully funded research position in privacy-preserving AI for video analytics.

NVIDIA Graduate Fellowship 2027 to 2028

This is the heavyweight of the list. The program is in its 26th year, accepts applications worldwide, and offers awards of up to $60,000 per student. Since 2002, it has handed out over 220 grants worth around $8 million, according to NVIDIA’s own blog. That track record tells you the competition is serious, so prepare accordingly. If Cambridge is also on your radar for PhD funding, the Gates Cambridge Scholarship 2027/28 runs on a similar fully funded basis.

You must hold PhD-level standing with at least one year completed. You must also stay a full-time PhD student for the nine-month award year, so do not plan to graduate before it ends. The fields are wide: AI, machine learning, robotics, computer vision, circuits and VLSI, networking, security, quantum computing, and more. Electrical and computer engineers fit right in.

There is a mandatory piece many applicants overlook. An in-person internship at an NVIDIA research office comes before the fellowship year, and you must be available in summer 2027. Your university administers the money, which means payment goes to the school rather than straight to you, per NVIDIA’s own guidance.

  • Deadline: October 30, 2026, and recommendation letters must also arrive by that date, as GadgetBond reports
  • Winner notification: January 15, 2027

Ask your professors for recommendation letters this week. Busy referees are the number one reason strong applications fail.

UQ Graduate Research School Scholarships, Australia

The University of Queensland offers a package that many PhD seekers dream about. You receive a living stipend of AUD 39,220 per year, tax-free at the 2026 rate. The scholarship also covers Single Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC). It runs for 3.5 years, with a possible extension under university policy.

This round is for international applicants who start in Research Quarter 4, 2027, or in early 2028. You can study any field. Before you apply, though, you need an enrolling UQ school or institute and a suitable research supervisor. Email potential supervisors first. A supervisor who already knows your work makes your case far stronger.

  • Deadline: October 19, 2026
  • Funding: AUD 39,220 yearly stipend plus OSHC

Treat the supervisor search as step one, because it takes longer than the form itself.

Research Internships With Real Lab Time

Looking for another serious research internship beyond this list? You may also want to check this guide to CERN internships and graduate programmes at the world’s largest physics laboratory.

OIST Research Internship, Japan

The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology runs internships from April 1 to September 30, 2027. Each placement lasts four to six months. You may apply if you are in the final two years of a bachelor’s degree, enrolled in a master’s program, or a recent graduate with either degree. Current PhD students cannot apply.

Here is the catch. The application fee is JPY 5,000, and benefits vary. Do not call this internship fully funded until you check the current program page. Also note the exact cutoff: October 15, 2026, at 23:59 Japan Standard Time. That is late evening in Okinawa, and many applicants forget to convert it to their own time zone.

Pick a faculty member whose research matches your interests and mention them by name in your application.

Alan Turing Institute Internship Network, United Kingdom

The Turing Institute is the UK’s national institute for data science and AI. Its Autumn 2026 internships cover math, statistics, computer science, ethics, social science, and public policy. Pay depends on the individual internship.

Be careful here. This one is not open worldwide. You must be a current doctoral student or recent PhD graduate based in the UK or Republic of Ireland, with the right to work in the relevant location. If you live elsewhere, skip it and spend that time on something you can win.

  • Deadline: October 13, 2026, at 11:00 AM British Summer Time

United Nations Internships Worth Your Time

UN internships look brilliant on a CV. They also cost money, and every one listed here is unpaid. You pay for travel, visas, housing, food, and insurance. Budget at least a few thousand dollars before you accept an offer, and check whether your university offers a stipend for unpaid placements.

UN ESCAP in Bangkok

The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific hires interns in Bangkok. Its rules say citizens of non-UN-member states may apply, and no nationality quota exists. You qualify if you are enrolled in or have finished a graduate program, or if you are in or have finished the final year of a first university degree. Three vacancies are open:

  • Energy Division: suits engineering, economics, and sustainable development backgrounds. Deadline October 30, 2026.
  • Communications and Digital Outreach: suits communications, digital media, and knowledge management backgrounds. Deadline October 30, 2026.
  • Economic Affairs (Trade Policy): suits economics, international trade, and development backgrounds. Job Opening 284109. Deadline October 18, 2026.

Apply for the Energy role if you hold an engineering degree. It is a natural fit for electrical and mechanical graduates. Check each vacancy page for its individual requirements.

UN-Habitat in Mexico City

This six-month Project Implementation internship needs fluency in Spanish. English is desirable. Urban planning, development, and project management students fit best. Both national and international applicants may apply. The Job Opening ID is 285283, and the deadline is October 14, 2026.

If you do not speak Spanish well, move on. Fluency is a hard requirement.

OHCHR in Geneva

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights seeks an intern for its Media Outreach and Spokesperson’s Office. It is full-time and unpaid, lasting three months with a possible renewal up to six. Law, journalism, communications, international relations, and political science students are strong candidates. English fluency is required, and French is an asset. International applicants may need a visa or work authorization, and Switzerland is expensive, so plan your finances carefully.

  • Deadline: October 13, 2026

Geneva rents are steep, which makes this one realistic only if you have savings or outside support.

A Non-UN Option in Copenhagen

The Danish Refugee Council is a humanitarian organization with offices around the world. It is hiring Spring 2027 interns for its Global Foundations Team and Institutional Donor Unit. Placements last four to six months. You must stay enrolled in a university for the full internship. If you lack the right to work in Denmark, DRC says it will support the process after selection.

The role is unpaid, though it lists benefits such as free lunch. Fundraising, donor relations, communications, and development studies students should take a close look.

  • Deadline: October 11, 2026, which is the soonest on this list

Paid Versus Unpaid and What It Costs You

Money decides who can afford these opportunities, so let me be blunt. Seven of the ten programs do not pay a stipend. Choose them only if you have a plan for living costs. Here is how I would think about each type:

  • Fully funded research: NVIDIA and UQ pay you to study. The Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships work on a similar fully funded basis, if you want another option in that bracket.
  • Partial or unclear support: OIST and the Turing Institute depend on the specific role.
  • Unpaid internships: the UN roles and DRC need outside funding.

Look for university grants, home-country scholarships, or employer sponsorship to cover an unpaid placement. Many students also work part-time online while interning remotely or in the evenings. It also helps to have a realistic sense of overall study costs going in — this guide on how to find affordable universities abroad is a useful starting point even if you’re only budgeting for an internship. Run the numbers before you apply, not after you receive an offer.

How to Apply Without Wasting Time

Follow these steps in this order:

  1. Sort the list by deadline and circle the three that fit your degree.
  2. Read each official eligibility page line by line.
  3. Update your CV to one clean page, or two for PhD applicants. If you’re applying to roles outside the UN system too, this guide on how to write a cover letter for jobs abroad pairs well with a freshly updated CV.
  4. Request recommendation letters at least two weeks early.
  5. Write a tailored statement for every application. Copy-pasted letters get ignored.
  6. Convert deadlines to your own time zone and set two reminders.
  7. Submit one full day early, because portals crash near cutoffs.

Not sure what belongs in that tailored statement? This guide on what a statement of purpose is and how to write one walks through exactly that. It’s also worth knowing how a statement of purpose differs from a personal statement, since some of these programs ask for one and not the other.

Need your referees lined up fast? This guide on how to ask for a scholarship recommendation letter covers how to approach them the right way, early.

You can realistically finish three strong applications in two weeks. Ten rushed ones will beat you.
