Registered Nurses with recent mental health and substance-use experience can apply for this permanent full-time position in Terrace, British Columbia. The role pays C$41.42 to C$55.91 per hour and focuses on helping patients safely manage acute substance withdrawal while preparing them for follow-up care in the community.

About the Role

Northern Health is hiring a Registered Nurse for its Mental Health and Substance Use Withdrawal Management service at Seven Sisters in Terrace. You’ll work in a dedicated withdrawal-management setting rather than a general hospital ward, caring for people experiencing acute symptoms related to substance withdrawal.

You’ll report to the Manager and work closely with the Withdrawal Management Unit Program Lead and a multidisciplinary care team. Your job starts with understanding the patient’s condition, monitoring changes, and identifying the level of nursing intervention required.

From there, you’ll help develop and carry out an individual care plan. The goal isn’t simply to manage symptoms during a difficult period. You’ll also help patients move toward appropriate follow-up services and a safe return to the community.

The position follows rotating day and night shifts. Scheduled hours are 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM and 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM. Northern Health is also implementing minimum Nurse-to-Patient Ratios across British Columbia as part of its approach to nursing staffing and patient care.

Primary Responsibilities

  • ✓
Complete initial and ongoing assessments of patients experiencing substance withdrawal
  • ✓
Monitor medical symptoms and changes in each patient’s condition
  • ✓
Develop and implement individualized nursing care plans
  • ✓
Provide appropriate technical, therapeutic, and safety interventions
  • ✓
Work collaboratively with patients, families, physicians, and the multidisciplinary team
  • ✓
Promote person-centred, recovery-oriented, and culturally safe care
  • ✓
Communicate important clinical information clearly and accurately
  • ✓
Help patients connect with appropriate follow-up services after withdrawal management

Qualifications

  • ✓
Graduation from an approved School of Nursing
  • ✓
Current practicing registration as an RN or RPN with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM)
  • ✓
At least two years of recent clinical nursing experience in a Mental Health and Substance Use setting
  • ✓
Strong verbal, written, and computer-based communication skills
  • ✓
Ability to assess patients, organize care, and make clinical decisions using relevant evidence
  • ✓
Physical ability to safely perform the duties of the position
